Reclaimed Antique Heart Pine Plank FlooringRestoring The Past - Preserving The Future ... In
the 1700's and the 1800's, vast tracts of southern and eastern lands were clear cut. The Long Leaf Pine was one of the most popular trees cut because of its incredible beauty, strength and durability. It was a very slow growing tree, taking anywhere from
200 to 500 years to mature, and mainly consisted of heartwood. Because of its beauty, heart pine became the wood of choice for flooring and fine joinery. It was chosen as the prime building material during the Industrial Revolution up to the early
Twentieth Century because of its strength. Unfortunately, due to the clear cutting, the Long Leaf Pine has nearly passed into extinction. The only significant source for this wood today is through reclaimed timbers from within warehouses and factories constructed during the Industrial Revolution of the late 1800's and early 1900's. Through recycling and processing of these time period structural beams and joists we are making it possible for you to once again enjoy the beauty and authenticity of heart pine flooring - without impacting today's natural resources. Unfinished Antique Heart Pine Plank Flooring is available in ¾" thickness with widths varying from 2½" up to 8" in either Selection or No. 1 Grade. Long Leaf or Heart Pine was specified by architects and designers during the Colonial and Victorian eras not only for its beauty but
because of its extraordinary hardness and durability. Hardwood Floors magazine recently reported research that shows that heart pine has the same hardness as red oak, the most common species used for flooring today. In addition to Antique Heart Pine flooring, Indian River Woods offers moldings, stair components, mantels, and beams. While not resawn from old beams or recovered from the river, this flooring production offers the same exact species in old growth longleaf. The logs are purchased from protected National Forests where cutting is necessitated and also from private landowners when thinning becomes necessary. Many companies now offer new heart pine flooring, but ask them to specify only longleaf and you'll get an excuse or they'll tell you it doesn't matter. Don't believe them. Why should you care if it's only longleaf? Longleaf pine, while now classified as one of the four yellow pines is extremely rare,
but it was the species of choice up until the early part of this century for flooring and millwork for its beauty and for timber framing because of its strength. Does it look the same as other yellow pines? No, longleaf is a very slow growing tree
which gives the wood a beautiful, dense grain. Its heart is a rich lustrous red color, very different from the light pink to brown of the other yellow pines. Our Colonial and Contemporary grades are 100% genuine longleaf (pinus palustris) pine, with the Colonial having 95% and better heartwood, and the Contemporary grade having 80% and better heartwood. Our Country and Cabin grades are offered with a heavy percentage of longleaf mixed with other heart yellow pines.
