SOUTHERN CYPRESS FLOORINGIn colonial and Victorian eras cypress was the wood of choice in the South of the U.S. for interior molding, doors, paneling and flooring. Flooring use was common in areas where cypress was plentiful, i.e. Florida, Louisiana, Georgia. With the advent of and predominance of oak flooring production, cypress has quietly slipped from common use, and many people are only familiar with cypress being used in exterior applications. Cypress, while not as prevalent as it was in ages past, still has natural stands occurring of old growth. Cypress is protected in many wetland areas and no logging occurs there, but on many other sites it is selectively cut and allowed to regenerate naturally (as in hardwood stands). With the select harvesting and limited production of today, cypress is a sustainable yield specie. It is the goal of Indian River Woods to bring back a part of our nation's history and re-aquaint America (and the world) with one of its most beautiful woods. Nowhere is that beauty better displayed tha in flooring applications.
Cypress is a very dense grained wood with a grain and color that is similar to heart pine without the high costs associated with that species. While softer than heart pine and red oak, it is hard enough for flooring. Its hardness is about the same as American Cherry and Chestnut.
